The Medical College of Virginia Twin Study

چکیده
Background. In subjects of all ages, those who weigh the most often have the highest blood pressure. Thus, in epidemiological studies, weight is the most important correlate of blood pressure. Using the data from the Medical College of Virginia Twin Study, we asked these questions: 1) Do the same genetic paths that regulate body size also regulate systolic and diastolic blood pressure? 2) Are there distinct genetic pathways that regulate each of these variables? 3) Does environment play a major regulatory role? 4) Are the correlations among these variables mainly due to genetic or environmental effects? 5) Do genetic paths that regulate body size mediate the correlation between systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure? Methods and Results. We ascertained 253 Caucasian twin pairs living in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The average age was 11.2±0.2 years. We used multivariate path analyses to investigate the genetic relations among systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and body size. We found that there was

Effectiveness of Kangaroo Mother Care in the Management of Twin Low-Birth-Weight Neonates: A Non-Randomized, Open, Controlled Trial
Background: Twin low-birth-weight (LBW) neonates are exposed to the increased risk of mortality and morbidity due to poor prognosis. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of kangaroo mother care (KMC) in the management of twin LBW neonates. Methods: This prospective, observational study was conducted on 150 neonates with the birth weight of

Fetus- in- fetu (FIF), is a rare congenital anomaly that occurs due to malformed fetus growing inside the twin. It occurs due to the aberration in the diamniotic monochorionic monozygotic twinning with unequal division of inner cell mass of blastocyst leading to inclusion of small cell mass inside the developing sister fetus. The most common presentation will be with intra-abdominal mass locat...

In their recent paper (Acta Genet Med Gemellol 33:565-569, 1984), DeMeersman and coworkers reported some interesting observations concerning the effects of exercisetraining on the response of maximal oxygen uptake in one set of MZ triplets [6]. The association of the Human Performance Laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University with the well established twin scientists of the Department of H...

In order to determine the level of residual Dichlorvos pesticide on strawberry fruits in research greenhouse conditions in crop year of 2011-2012, a study was carried out in Education and Research Center for Greenhouse Productions of Islamic Azad University of Khorasgan of Isfahan. Factorial experiment was carried out based on a completely randomized design with two factors of pesticide consump...
متن کاملCentral corneal thickness is highly heritable: the twin eye studies.
PURPOSE A classic twin study was performed to determine the heritability of central corneal thickness (CCT), an important parameter in glaucoma assessment. METHODS The concordance of CCT between monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins was compared. A total of 256 twin pairs (131 MZ and 125 DZ) were recruited from three centers: the Twin Eye Study in Tasmania, the Brisbane Adolescent Twin St...
